Benedict is the son of Oberon by Cymnea, with personal colors of orange, yellow, and brown. He is recognized as the master tactician of the family as well as the unmatched master of all martial weapons, and a man who seldom smiles. He chose to remove himself from the struggle for the crown, leaving Eric and Corwin as the eldest surviving heirs. Moreover, Oberon declared his marriage with Cymnea null and void, rendering all his children by her retroactively illegitimate. Benedict has had an affair with Lintra the Hellmaid of Chaos, during a brief interlude in hostilities between them, and is unaware that she bore a child as a result of this. Benedict and Lintra subsequently came to blows again, and Benedict slew Lintra but lost his arm. He still fights better with one arm than anybody else with two. After Benedict, Eric was reputedly the greatest swordsman in the Universe of Amber and Shadow.

In Their Own Story

Benedict's story is one of martial prowess and personal tragedy. As the master tactician and unmatched master of all martial weapons, he chose to remove himself from the struggle for the crown, leaving Eric and Corwin as the eldest surviving heirs. His affair with Lintra the Hellmaid of Chaos occurred during a brief interlude in hostilities between them, and he is unaware that she bore a child as a result of this. Benedict and Lintra subsequently came to blows again, and Benedict slew Lintra but lost his arm. Despite this loss, he still fights better with one arm than anybody else with two. His great-granddaughter Dara, born of his affair with Lintra, is first met as a fairly young woman, but within only a couple of weeks of Amber time, she has grown considerably older and embittered in Chaos, to herself be a mother of at least three fully adult children.
